Turn Your Negatives Positive - The Power of Positive Thought I used to like to believe that I was the master of cynicism, continuously and effortlessly turning everything in the world into a dry, witty joke.· I thought it was fun and brought brief moments of joy into my life despite the dark world around me.· I looked down on overly happy people - I thought they were out of touch with reality and hiding from life.· I thought they were a joke. Turns out, I was the joke. It's amazing what a little positive thinking can do for a person.· ·I still have trouble accepting the fact that positive thought can actually bring about long-term happiness.· The theory goes against everything that our cynical and hypocritical world has led us believe.· It's easy to blame others or "that which is beyond our control" when things don't go our way.· It's easy to think that the world is against us and that happiness and success are only meant for a few people in the world.· It's easy to be negative.· Why?· Who knows, it just is. Being positive is not easy, at least, it's not in the beginning.· Positive thoughts and actions take work.· In fact, positive thoughts and actions require significantly more effort than negative thoughts and actions.· But, because they require more effort, they are more powerful and can bring about greater change in our lives. Beginning on a path toward increased positive thought (thus, happiness): 1) Count Your Blessings Daily End each day by writing down 10 things you are thankful for.· It may sound stupid but try it for a week and see what happens.· Write only positive/affirmative things (I'm glad I am proficient at my job), not negative positivies (I'm glad I don't suck at my job).· Positive affirmations are powerful statements and help us to reprogram negative thought processes.· Negative positives only really work to reinforce a cynical and counter-productive mindset.· Avoid them. 2) List Your Positive Goals End each day by writing down 10 goal statements - remember, write only positive statements - don't write anything that may reinforce a negative thought process (such as, I hope to suck less at my job).· Write short-term, mid-term and long-term goals (such as; a) tomorrow I will get to the gym, b) next week I will apply for a new job and c) next year, I will make more money) Try these two things for a few weeks and I bet you'll begin to see improvements in life - they may sound silly but they work! |
