Temporary Mood Improvement While long-term happiness requires significant effort, patience and often an altered perception of life effents, there are a number of things one can do to quickly improve one's present state-of-mind. A number of these items, when done repeatedly, can help improve one's long-term happiness quotient. Mood Improvement Measures: 1) Increase your physical activity level I'm the first to admit that physical activity is a drag. I'd much rather sit on the couch and watch tv than go for a jog. However, study after study proves that an increase in physical activity can lead to an improved mood. The level of physical activity need not even be strenuous. In fact, the following have been proven to significantly improve one's mood quickly: a. A leisurely walk outside. - a quick 15 minute walk around the block or neighborhood can do wonders for your body and your brain b. A quick shopping trip - It might not make sense but a quick trip to the mall or errands to your favorite big-box retailer can help your mood - the physical activity associated with shopping is just moderate enough to get your blood flowing. c. Breathing exercises- measured breathing exercises can help both calm you down while improving your mood. 2) Finish Something A negative mood is often the result of excess stress or a cluttered environment. Complete a task that's been on your to-do-list for a while. Schedule an appointment, clean out your junk drawer, etc. Keep the task small and reasonable - don't try to tackle something too big either - that may lead to additional stress (defeats the purpose of the exercise). Complete a small task and then move on to something rewarding, like reading or a spa treatment. Finish something and then get some seperation from your environment. 3) Learn Something Spend a few minutes surfing the internet for information on a topic of interest or go to the bookstore or library and pick up a book on something you'd like to know more about. Don't try to become an expect, just spend some time getting familiar with a new topic. This mental stimilation will provide some distance from your sour mood and allow your mood to improve. Good luck. With Love, ![]() Dr Roman Tic |
