Everyone needs something to "sleep" in (I'm not talking about beds). This type of gift really should be reserved for special events like anniversaries and birthdays or as a special surprise (and only as a secondary gift - there better be something more thoughtful or traditional, like jewelry or flowers given as well). I would recommend not giving underwear as a gift on a first date or as a holiday gift to be opened in front of groups of people - just makes for bad form.
